Keetah Grove Reports

2008 Archived Reports

Keetah Grove, February 2005

May 2008
The weather in May was very pleasant but dry with day temperatures around 23-25 degrees and night temperatures between 2 and 14 degrees. Rainfall for the month was only 6mm.

Day time irrigation was almost continuous, excluding time required for a few repairs to the pumps and motors.

Total water applied to the trees (110,000 trees) was 82 mega litres or approximately 916 litres per tree including rainfall.

The pruning of water shoots of the Manzanillo trees is continuing and there are18,000 Manzanillo trees more to go.

We have replaced laterals and sprinklers to one Manzanillo block and another 6 blocks are to be done in June.

In mid June we will start a foliar application of calcium nitrate and a possible boron application.

We have removed approx. 39,000 abandoned trees and another 16,000 trees are to be removed in June.

The weather during the harvest was very comfortable. Day temperatures were 27-30 degrees and night temperatures were around 7 degrees.

Unfortunately there was no rainfall in April. The irrigation was close to continuous, as much as possible.

Total water applied to the trees (110,000 trees) was 124 mega litres or approximately 1,130 litres per tree.

The pruning of water shoots of the Manzanillo trees is continuing.

Straight after the harvest all Frantoio and some Manzanillo blocks will be sprayed with Lebaycid to illuminate lace bug.

Finally the removal of the abandoned trees will be commenced on May 5th.

March 2008
March has been a cool month when comparing averages with the last year. Day temperatures have been around 30 degrees.

The harvest was commenced on March 25th and it is in progress now. My estimates are about 500 tonnes plus of fruit.

We have been using the two Gregoire machines and the new Coe Shaker, which arrived and was assembled early this month. The shaker has provided us with an alternative option to harvest some of our larger trees that have outgrown the Gregoire harvesters.

Due to the really slow processing of olives at the Inglewood plant this year, at this stage, I am expecting to complete the harvest by the end of April.

Rainfall for the month was only 2 mm and the irrigation has been close to continuous.

Total water applied to the trees (110,000 trees) was 136 mega litres or approximately 1,240 litres per tree.

The pruning of water shoots of the Manzanillo trees is continuing.

Straight after the harvest we will be spraying the whole grove to help eliminate lace bug.

February 2008
New Coe Shaker for 2008 Harvest (read report)

February has been a cool month compared to the last year. Day temperatures have been around 30 degrees with only a few days heating up to 38-39 degrees.

Rainfall for the month was 101 mm but because almost the entire rainfall was received in the first week of the month the irrigation has been close to continuous.

Total water applied to 110,000 trees was 175 megalitres or approximately 1,500 litres per tree.

The trees, including February’s rainfall, have received about 3,100 litres per tree.

The pruning of water shoots on the Manzanillo trees is continuing. We are currently pruning some Manzanillo blocks, which are to be harvested with the new Coe Olive Harvester.

The slashing and mulching will be completed mid March. The spraying of the weeds is also continuing and it will be carried on in March.

Next month, after the harvest, we will start a foliar application of calcium nitrate and the application of NPK (N 14.1%, P 4.1, K 10.8, S 12.7 and B 0.98%) granular fertiliser.

At this stage we are looking forward to commencing the harvest in March after Easter.

January 2008
The weather in January was hot and dry but reasonable with day temperatures around 30-35 degrees.

Rainfall for the month was 54mm.

Irrigation has been around a clock, only stopping for maintenance and breakdowns.

Mainly we have irrigated about 102,000 trees, the blocks with crop, which are potentially going to be harvested.

Total water applied to the trees was 106 mega litres or approximately 950 litres per tree. The trees including January’s rainfall have received about 1,800 litres per tree.

We have completed the foliar application of Grocal MGB (calcium, magnesium and boron) and a fertigation of Sulsa (27% nitrogen).

Pruning of water shoots on the Manzanillo trees is continuing.

The slashing and spraying of summer weeds is also continuing and it will be carried on in February.

At this stage we are looking forward to commencing the harvest in March after Easter.
